Rethinking Disabilities in Mathematics | In-person

In this workshop, teachers will explore key ideas from Rethinking Disability and Mathematics by Rachel Lambert, which advocates for a shift in how we view students with disabilities in math classrooms. Lambert argues that all students, regardless of ability, should have the right to engage with math in meaningful ways. The workshop will introduce Universal Design for Learning for Math (UDL Math), a framework that empowers disabled and neurodiverse students by providing multiple pathways to mathematical understanding. Teachers will learn how to create inclusive math classrooms that celebrate students' strengths and foster a sense of identity as math learners. Practical strategies for applying UDL in K-8 classrooms will be shared, along with examples of real teachers redesigning their classrooms to increase access for all students. The session will emphasize equitable math instruction, focusing on supporting cognitive, affective, and strategic development for all learners, including those with disabilities, neurodiverse students, and multilingual learners.
