Join this two-year professional learning academy for middle and high school English teachers focused on strengthening writing instruction. The goal is to equip teachers to design cognitively rigorous writing tasks, deliver targeted feedback, and build student stamina and independence as writers.

We will explore sound, performance-driven instruction that emphasizes preparing students for high-stakes assessments (e.g., ACT) while aligning with the Science of Reading and structured literacy principles. We will explore how explicit, systematic instruction on sentence structure, grammar, syntax, morphology, text structures, and the writing process is key to improving clarity, coherence, and analytical writing. We will use evidence-based instructional routines with a focus on idea generation, planning, drafting, and revising. We will consider how the integration of reading-writing connections supports knowledge building and content learning.

OBJECTIVES

• A structured, research-aligned framework for secondary writing instruction
• Explicit connections between structured literacy, language development, and writing quality
• Instructional strategies that improve performance on assessments such as the ACT without narrowing instruction
• Collaborative examination of student work to inform instruction and feedback
• Opportunities for practice, reflection, and refinement across multiple school years
