Literacy Think Tank for Secondary ELA Leaders: A Virtual Series
Questions? Please contact Amy Ruppert, Program Assistant at aruppert@cesa6.org.
These one-hour virtual think tank sessions are designed specifically for secondary leaders (middle and high school principals, assistant principals, and coaches) who want to deepen their understanding of structured literacy and consider how its principles can shape effective ELA programming and instructional leadership in grades 6–12. Rather than focusing on elementary-only practices, these sessions address the realities of secondary contexts—complex texts, diverse learners, competing instructional priorities, and rigorous, content-driven standards.
Participants will briefly ground themselves in the core components of structured literacy (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and text structure) and then engage in strategic conversation about how these elements intersect with school-wide literacy goals, teacher support, curriculum alignment, and instructional coaching. Through guided discussion, shared examples, and problem-solving, leaders will explore how structured literacy can support adolescent readers who struggle with decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—while maintaining grade-level expectations and preparing all students for post-secondary success.
